Iconography
Using iconography
Iconography should be used with purpose, to support a piece of content or an action to be taken. The picture or symbol used should clearly represent the information it supports, to reduce ambiguity or cognitive load. If having an icon does not enhance the experience and feels like it isn’t needed, then it probably isn’t required.
Types of iconography
There are two styles of iconography we use:
Brand icons
Our brand icons are emotive, simple, pictorial icons. They’re primarily used for marketing purposes, so you are more likely to see them on landing pages, guide pages and in emails.
Utility icons
Utility icons are functional, symbolic icons in their simplest form. They represent common actions and commands to provide additional context and enhance usability.
Channel icons
The main core channels have their own specific icon. These icons help to give the core channels more visual prominence on the page. They are usually accompanied by a tertiary button or text link. However they can be used in a fill state to provide visual emphasis.
Find these as core channel icons in both our Sketch Libraries.
