Notifications are used to alert a user of an important piece of information that will aid them in completing their journey.

A notification can be used where:

You have an important piece of information that you need the user to see without their interaction

A notification should be avoided where:

The information is not vital to a user and they could complete the journey without it (in this case try using help)

To give a user as positive message after they have completed a successful action

To tell a user that they have made a mistake and caused an error as a result of an action they have made
To tell a user something has gone wrong with the service even if they didn't directly cause it

To generally warn a user of something that could happen during their journey
More specifically to warn a user of a potential error they may find
To inform the user of essential information they should be aware of before continuing their journey (e.g. on travel would be used for COVID messages / government guidelines / restricted dates)
